Becoming a Trained Leader

Parents are the lifeblood of any Cub Scout Pack. We depend on our parents to step up and help on numerous levels. Without their help, our program would be limited and our Scouts would be missing out on the fun.

It is very easy to become a Trained Leader in Cub Scouts. ALL the required training can be taken online – so you can take the courses at your own pace.

Steps Toward Leadership

Talk to the Cubmaster or Committee Chair about your interest. Discuss which role(s) you might focus your effort on.

  1. Request an Adult Leader Application
  2. Go to my.scouting.org and take the courses that apply to that area of focus. You can take any of the courses you wish at any time, but make sure you take the required ones.
  3. Submit your Application with a printed copy of your “Youth Protection Training” certificate.
  4. In 2015 all-new online training was released and there are now several smaller classes that just have to be taken once. There are three groups of classes for each role (Cubmaster, Committee Member, and Den Leader). The three groups for each role are time-based and the first group should be taken before working with the scouts. The second group should be taken within the first 30 days and the last group should be taken within the first 90 days of taking a leadership position in the pack. Expect the online classes to take around 3 hours total to complete. If you prefer classroom training there are also several opportunities to take classes within our council.
  5. When you get your official BSA number you should plug it into your my.scouting.org account. (This helps in January when it comes time to re-charter our Pack.)

Committee Member required online classes

  • Leader Position-Specific – Pack Committee classes.

All parents are suggested to take this online class:

The more parents the better the program and the more rewarding it is for everyone. Once you have taken this training we encourage leaders to consider meeting the requirements of the Scouter’s Training Award for Assistant Den Leaders and Committee Members and Den Leader Award for Den Leaders.
